The old building next door to the City Hall and Peabody Opera House Buildings has been the victim of various rehab projects that have failed. But now, a new plan to bring the building back to life is in the pipes. According to a Post-Dispatch article, a developer is looking to convert the old courthouse into a 150 room hotel with a Courtroom themed Pool and Fitness Center area.
The building is full of history and the hotel is supposed to present that. Situated along the Gateway Mall, and very close to the Scottrade Center and Peabody Opera House, the building offers a unique location for out of town visitors. The visitors who stay at this hotel are only 6 Blocks away from the Washington Avenue District and only 3 Blocks away from the soon to be fully renovated Union Station.
The Downtown region has had a huge hole left open in the Hotel Business since the Millennium Hotel closed in 2013. That closure took 750 hotel Rooms with it. The Municipal Courts hotel will help take a bite out of that while the other 4 Proposed Hotels in Downtown will help fill the gap left by the Millennium Hotel. A majority of the new Hotels are in old and Historic Buildings spread throughout the Downtown region.
When this Hotel opens in the year 2019, hopefully the Downtown region has not many (or none at all), abandoned buildings left. This way, our Downtown will be ready to grow even more to where it will reestablish itself as the Center of the Region.
